Can I breastfeed?

Diagnosed during pregnancy. Nobody has said anything about afterwards and I am now inventing worries.

Genital herpes does not pass through breast milk, so having it is not a reason not to breastfeed.

The exception is a lesion on the breast itself, which would mean avoiding feeding from that side until it has healed. That is uncommon but it is the specific thing to watch for.

Ask about your antiviral medication specifically if you are taking any, because that is a separate question from the virus and there is established information on it.

The bigger newborn precautions are about handwashing and about cold sores: no kissing the baby with an active cold sore, by you or by visitors. Say that out loud to relatives, because it is the one people find rude and it is the one that matters.
