Genital warts

Can I use a wart remover from the pharmacy?

There are products on the shelf for warts and verrucas and they are far cheaper than a clinic. Is there a reason not to?

Yes, and it is a firm no. Products for hands and feet are formulated for thick skin and are not suitable for genital skin. They can cause significant chemical burns and scarring there.

The packaging usually says this explicitly, and it is not a legal disclaimer, it is the actual reason.

The other problem is diagnosis. You would be treating something you have not had looked at, and a number of things in that area are not warts at all.

The appropriate topical treatments are prescription products in most places precisely because of this. The cost difference is real, but so is the damage.
