Untreated for months. What is the damage?

Looking back I think I have had symptoms on and off since the spring and ignored them. Now being treated. How worried should I be about what has already happened?

NoteMember experience, not medical advice. Symptoms overlap between infections and only a test can tell them apart.

The things that matter with prolonged untreated infection are ascending infection, which in women means pelvic inflammatory disease and its consequences, and in men epididymitis. Rarely it spreads to the bloodstream and joints.

But most of that is a risk rather than an inevitability, and plenty of people have carried it for months without lasting damage.

Tell the clinician the honest timeline rather than a tidier one. It changes what they ask about and what they examine.

If you have had pelvic pain, pain during sex, or fever at any point in those months, say so specifically. Those are the symptoms that would move this from routine treatment to something needing more attention.
