What exactly is disseminated gonococcal infection?

Term came up in a previous thread here and I want to understand it properly rather than half understand it.

NoteMember experience, not medical advice. Symptoms overlap between infections and only a test can tell them apart.

It is what happens when the bacteria get into the bloodstream from the original site and settle elsewhere. The classic picture is fever, a small number of skin lesions, inflammation of tendons, and joint pain that moves around.

Less commonly it affects the heart valves or the lining of the brain, which is the reason it gets taken seriously.

It is uncommon relative to how many people have gonorrhoea, and it is more likely where infection has been present for a while untreated. Which is the practical lesson rather than a reason to panic about a treated infection.

Treatment is generally hospital based initially rather than an injection and home. So if this is ever the diagnosis, expect a different pathway.
