Can I stop PrEP and restart later?

Not sexually active at the moment and it feels pointless to keep taking it. Can I just stop and pick it up again?

NoteMember experience, not medical advice. Symptoms overlap between infections and only a test can tell them apart.

Yes, and stopping and restarting is normal rather than a failure. There is a proper way to do each though, which is why it is a conversation with the clinic rather than a decision made alone.

Restarting in particular involves a period before you are protected, and testing beforehand, so it is not simply resuming tablets on the day.

Tell them before you stop rather than after. Stopping also has its own short tail of doses depending on the regimen you are on, and that differs between daily and event based use.

Get tested when you stop, as a clean line under the period you were covered for. It makes the restart conversation much simpler later.
