Testing my partner after my diagnosis

Diagnosed last week. My partner needs testing and I do not know how to raise it or what to expect from the answer.

NoteMember experience, not medical advice. Symptoms overlap between infections and only a test can tell them apart.

Two practical things that are time sensitive. If the last sex was within the last few days, post exposure prophylaxis may be relevant and that window is measured in hours. Say that first.

After that, testing, and then a repeat later because of the window period.

The clinic can support this conversation and in many places can do the notification themselves. You do not have to carry it alone and you do not have to be the one who explains the science.

A negative result is common in this situation and is not evidence that you are wrong about your own diagnosis. Transmission is not automatic, and long standing couples where one partner is positive and the other is not are ordinary rather than remarkable.
