What is a blip?

Viral load came back as a small number after two years of undetectable. Told it is probably a blip. Probably is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

A blip is a single low level detectable result with undetectable results either side of it. They are common, they are usually not a sign of treatment failure, and they often have no identifiable cause.

What matters is the next result. A pattern of rising numbers is a different situation from a single low one.

Lab variation and recent illness or vaccination are both offered as explanations. My clinic repeats the test rather than changing anything, which is standard.

If adherence has slipped, say so now rather than at the next appointment. That is the one explanation that does change what happens next.
