HPV positive but the cells were normal

Result says high risk HPV detected, cytology normal, come back in a year. I do not understand what I am waiting for.

You are waiting to see whether your immune system clears it, which is what happens in the large majority of cases.

The virus being present with normal cells means nothing has changed yet. The repeat test asks whether it has gone or whether it is persisting, and persistence is the thing that matters.

A year feels like an abandonment when you are anxious. It is actually the interval at which the answer becomes meaningful, because testing sooner would mostly find the same virus and tell you nothing new.

Mine cleared by the repeat test. The year was much harder than the result was, and I wish I had known how common that outcome is.
