Cleared it, now positive again. Reinfection or reactivation?

Negative two years running, now positive for a high risk type again. I have had one partner in that time.

NoteMember experience, not medical advice. Symptoms overlap between infections and only a test can tell them apart.

Both are possible and they cannot be distinguished by any test you can get. Reactivation of virus that was suppressed rather than eliminated is documented, particularly as people get older.

So a new positive is not proof of a new exposure, and it should not be treated as evidence about a relationship.

It is also worth checking whether it is the same type as before. Some results give the type, some just say high risk positive, and the two situations read quite differently.

The management is the same either way, which is the practically important part. Follow the interval they give you and the question of origin does not change what happens.
