Do I still need screening after a hysterectomy?

Hysterectomy last year. Assumed screening was over and now I have received an invitation.

It depends on why the operation was done and whether the cervix was removed. If the cervix was removed for reasons unrelated to abnormal cells, screening usually stops.

If there was a history of high grade abnormality, follow up often continues on the vaginal vault for a period afterwards.

Some hysterectomies leave the cervix in place, and in that case screening carries on as normal. Plenty of people do not know which operation they had, so it is a fair question to ask.

Ring whoever sent the invitation and give them your surgical history. That is the fastest way to find out whether it is a genuine recall or a list that has not been updated.
