Syphilis

Notifying someone from over a year ago

Look back period apparently goes back further than I expected. I have to contact someone I have not spoken to since last spring.

Look back periods for syphilis are longer than for the other bacterial infections, and they depend on the stage. That is not the clinic being thorough for its own sake, it reflects how long the infection can sit quietly.

The clinic notification service exists for exactly this kind of contact and does not name you.

Use the service for the difficult ones without guilt. It is not a cop out, it is the mechanism designed for this and the staff are better at it than any of us.

Worth remembering what you are actually doing. Untreated syphilis over years is one of the genuinely serious outcomes in this whole area, and an awkward message can prevent it.
