Syphilis

Can you get syphilis from kissing?

Sounds far fetched but a sore in the mouth was mentioned in another thread here.

It is possible, and it is not far fetched. Syphilis spreads through contact with an infectious sore, and sores can occur in the mouth and on the lips.

It is uncommon relative to sexual transmission, but deep kissing with someone who has an oral lesion is a recognised route.

Which is also why oral sex transmits it readily. People discount oral risk for syphilis and it is one of the infections where that assumption is most wrong.

Infectiousness is confined to particular stages though. Latent infection is not transmitted this way, which is why staging comes up so much in these threads.
