Syphilis

Told I have old treated syphilis and I never knew

Routine blood test for something else. Results suggest previous infection, treated at some point. I have no memory of any of this.

This happens. A positive treponemal test with a negative or very low non treponemal test can indicate previously treated infection, or infection that was inadvertently treated by antibiotics given for something else entirely.

A course of antibiotics for a chest infection years ago can do it without anybody knowing.

What matters is whether current infection has been excluded properly rather than assumed. Ask whether both test types were done and what both showed, and whether they are confident it is old.

Get the interpretation in writing. You will be asked about this result for the rest of your life and having a clinician’s written conclusion saves a great deal of repetition.
