    Been seeing someone for about six weeks and it is heading somewhere. I have had genital herpes for four years. I have rehearsed this conversation so many times in my head that I have talked myself out of the relationship twice.

    What actually worked for you? I keep drafting speeches and they all sound like a confession.

Member experience, not medical advice. Symptoms overlap between infections and only a test can tell them apart.

    Drop the speech. The speech is the problem. Mine was about four sentences: I have genital herpes, here is what that actually means day to day, here is what I do about it, ask me anything.

    Tone carries more than content. If you deliver it like a confession they will receive it like one. Delivered as information, most people take it as information.

    Timing mattered for me more than wording. Not in bed, not five minutes before, and not on a third date as a party fact either. Somewhere ordinary, with time afterwards to answer questions.

    Also let them go away and read. The instant reaction is rarely the final one, and mine came back the next day with sensible questions and no drama.

    One practical thing to have ready: know what your own situation is. How often you get outbreaks, whether you take suppressive treatment, what you do about it. Being able to answer calmly does more reassuring than any script.
