    Diagnosed on Tuesday. I have a first appointment with a specialist team next week. Right now my head is full of things I absorbed years ago that I suspect are badly out of date, and I don’t know what to expect.

    What you’re carrying is almost certainly out of date. Modern treatment is generally a simple daily regimen, and for most people started early it means a normal life expectancy.

    The first appointment is mostly baseline bloods and a long conversation. Take someone with you if you can, or take notes, because you will not retain it all.

    The thing nobody told me and I wish they had: the goal of treatment is to get the virus to a level where tests can’t detect it, and once you’re durably at that level you cannot pass it on sexually. That is established, not optimism. It reframed the whole thing for me.

    The first month is the hardest. It does get quieter.

    Also ask the team about peer support. Talking to someone who was a year ahead of me did more than anything I read.
