    My partner has been on treatment for a few years and is undetectable. He has explained U=U to me and I believe him, but I notice I am still anxious, and I would rather understand it properly than just be told not to worry.

Member experience, not medical advice. Symptoms overlap between infections and only a test can tell them apart.

    Undetectable equals untransmittable means that when someone is on effective treatment and their viral load stays undetectable, they do not pass HIV on to sexual partners. It came out of large studies following serodifferent couples over years, and it’s now the mainstream clinical position rather than a hopeful slogan.

    The two things that carry the weight are taking treatment consistently and keeping up with routine monitoring, which he’s already doing.

    Wanting to understand rather than be reassured is a good instinct and not a slight on him. Go with him to one of his appointments if he’s open to it and ask his team directly. Hearing it from a clinician settled it for me in a way that reading couldn’t.

    Worth also asking about PrEP if it would help you personally feel safer. Some people use it belt and braces even in this situation.
