Partner tested positive, I tested negative. Do I still get treated?

My partner was diagnosed. I went in the next day, tested, and mine came back negative. They offered to treat me anyway and I did not know what to say, so I said I would think about it.

NoteMember experience, not medical advice. Symptoms overlap between infections and only a test can tell them apart.

Take the treatment. This is standard and it has a name, treating on the basis of exposure rather than on the basis of your result.

The reason is timing. If the exposure was recent, there may not be enough there to detect yet. A negative test the day after your partner’s diagnosis is not the reassurance it looks like.

The other half is that treating both of you at the same time is what stops the ping pong pattern. If you wait to test positive before being treated, you spend that window potentially passing it back.

Go back and say you have thought about it. Nobody will be annoyed, this is an extremely normal reversal and it is the outcome they were hoping for.
