Daily PrEP or on demand, how did you decide?

Been offered PrEP and told there is a daily option and an on demand option. Not sure how to think about the choice.

The practical question is how predictable your sex life is.

On demand, sometimes called 2-1-1, means dosing around a specific occasion. It suits people whose exposures are occasional and who know in advance. It also means fewer tablets overall, which is the reason a lot of people switch.

Daily suits people whose sex is frequent or unpredictable, because there is nothing to plan.

Important limitation: on demand dosing is studied and recommended for men who have sex with men. It is not the recommended approach for everyone, and for some groups daily is the option with the evidence behind it.

So this is genuinely a question for your prescriber rather than a preference you pick off a menu.

Whichever you choose, PrEP comes with a monitoring schedule, regular HIV testing and other checks. Ask what that schedule looks like before you start, because it is part of the commitment and people are sometimes surprised by it.
