Are home test kits reliable?

Thinking about ordering a kit rather than going in. Are the results actually trustworthy or is it a false economy?

The tests themselves are often the same laboratory tests a clinic would run. The weak point is usually not the test, it is the sample.

Collecting properly matters, and self collected samples from the wrong site tell you nothing about the right one. If you order a kit that only does a urine sample, you have not tested your throat or rectum, exactly as at a clinic.

Check what the kit actually covers before buying. Some are a single infection, some are a panel, and the marketing rarely makes it obvious which. Also check it is an accredited laboratory rather than a white labelled unknown.

Where home kits fall down is what happens after a positive. A clinic treats you, notifies partners and follows up. A kit sends you a result and leaves you to arrange the rest.

Good for a routine check when nothing is wrong. Less good as your only plan if something turns up.
