The tests themselves are often the same laboratory tests a clinic would run. The weak point is usually not the test, it is the sample.

Collecting properly matters, and self collected samples from the wrong site tell you nothing about the right one. If you order a kit that only does a urine sample, you have not tested your throat or rectum, exactly as at a clinic.
