Why doxycycline now instead of the single dose?

Treated years ago with a single dose and it was done in one go. This time I have been given a week long course of something else and nobody explained the change.

The guidance changed. In the CDC 2021 update doxycycline for a week became the recommended regimen for chlamydia, with the single dose azithromycin moved to alternative.

The main driver was rectal infection, where the week long course performs noticeably better. Since rectal infection is often present without anyone knowing, treating everyone with the more effective option was the simpler call.

The practical consequence is that finishing it matters more than it used to. A single dose is taken in front of the pharmacist. A week long course is something you have to remember twice a day, and stopping early when you feel fine is now a real failure mode.

Also worth asking about sun sensitivity if you are somewhere bright, and whether anything you take regularly needs spacing around it. Both are ordinary questions and the pharmacist will answer them in a minute.
