Pregnant and just diagnosed with a first outbreak

First outbreak, and I am in the last stretch of pregnancy. I have an appointment but not for days and I am frightening myself reading.

Please do call. I was in almost exactly this position and the tone of the appointment changed completely once they knew it was a first episode rather than a recurrence, because the two carry very different risks to the baby.

They were calm and had clearly done it many times.

Ring the maternity team today rather than waiting for the appointment. This is one of the situations where a first episode late in pregnancy is managed differently from a recurrence, and they will want to know now.

What is reassuring: this is a known situation with an established plan. Antiviral treatment and a conversation about delivery are the usual parts of it.

For anyone finding this later with a long standing diagnosis: recurrent herpes in pregnancy is a much lower risk situation, and suppressive treatment towards the end is commonly considered. Different conversation, much less alarming.

Either way the rule is the same. Tell the people delivering your baby.
