Why does PrEP need regular blood tests?

Started PrEP and the monitoring schedule is more than I expected. What are they actually checking?

Several things at once. HIV testing regularly, because taking PrEP while unknowingly positive is the situation the schedule exists to prevent. Kidney function, because that is the main thing to keep an eye on with some regimens. And routine screening for other infections, since PrEP does nothing about those.

The other STI screening turned out to be the most useful part for me. Two things were found on routine checks that I had no symptoms of and would not have gone in for.

If the schedule is hard to keep, say so rather than quietly missing appointments. Some services can adjust intervals or do part of it remotely, and they would much rather rearrange than lose track of you.
