What actually happens at a LEEP?

Colposcopy found changes and I have been booked for treatment to remove the area. Nobody described what the appointment is like.

Short version from having had one: local anaesthetic, the abnormal area is removed, and the whole thing takes minutes rather than hours. You walk out the same day.

Afterwards there is discharge and light bleeding for a couple of weeks and instructions about not swimming or using tampons for a while. Follow those.

The part nobody warned me about was the smell during the procedure. It is normal and it is not you. Knowing that in advance would have stopped me panicking on the table.

Ask two things before you leave: when your follow up test is, and whether this has any implications if you plan a pregnancy. Both are standard questions with straightforward answers, and both are much harder to chase up later.
