Does having HPV mean I will get cancer?

High risk type detected. I understand the connection to cancer exists but I cannot tell whether I am being sensible or hysterical.

No. Most people who acquire HPV clear it, and of those who do not, only a small proportion ever develop cell changes that matter. The path from persistent infection to cancer typically runs over many years, and screening exists to interrupt it early.

Having a high risk type detected puts you in a monitoring programme. It is not a prognosis.

The framing that helped me: the test found something that is common, and the system responded by watching more closely. That is the process working, not the process failing.

The one thing that genuinely raises risk is not attending the follow ups. Everything protective about your situation depends on you going back when they ask.
