Syphilis

Fever and chills hours after the injection

Treated this afternoon, and by evening I had chills, a headache and felt like I had flu. Is this an allergic reaction? Should I be going back in?

NoteMember experience, not medical advice. Symptoms overlap between infections and only a test can tell them apart.

That said, if you are struggling, or it is not settling within a day, or you have hives, swelling or difficulty breathing, that is different and needs to be seen now. Those would suggest an allergic reaction rather than this.

What you are describing sounds like the reaction that commonly follows the first dose of syphilis treatment. Fever, headache, aching, usually starting within hours and settling within about a day.

Importantly it is a reaction to the infection being killed off, not an allergy to the treatment. It gets confused for one constantly.

It is also the reason clinics tell pregnant patients specifically to make contact if it happens, because the situation is managed differently. Worth knowing if that applies to anyone reading.
