It is a real and long standing finding rather than scaremongering. Inflammation of the genital tract makes acquiring HIV easier, and trichomoniasis causes exactly that kind of inflammation.

The practical consequence is simply that treating it matters, and that a trich diagnosis is a reasonable moment to test for everything else and to ask about PrEP if it is relevant to you.
