What actually counts as exposure?

Genuinely unsure where the line is. Does everything count, or only certain things? I do not want to waste an appointment and I do not want to miss something either.

NoteMember experience, not medical advice. Symptoms overlap between infections and only a test can tell them apart.

You cannot waste an appointment by going, so start there. But to answer it: risk varies enormously by activity rather than being one flat category.

Unprotected vaginal or anal sex carries the broadest risk. Oral sex carries real but different risk, mainly for gonorrhoea, syphilis and herpes. Skin to skin contact without penetration can transmit herpes and HPV. Hands carry very little.

Describe what actually happened to the clinic rather than trying to classify it yourself first. They will sort out which of it matters, and they will not react.

The one that catches people out is that the lowest risk activities are not zero risk for the skin transmitted infections, and the highest risk ones are not certainties either. It is a gradient, not a switch.
