Chlamydia

They mentioned LGV. What is that?

Word came up in my appointment and I nodded rather than asking. Some sort of chlamydia variant?

Broadly yes. It is caused by particular strains of the same organism, and it behaves differently: more invasive, often affecting the rectum and lymph nodes, and it needs a longer course of treatment than ordinary chlamydia.

Because of the longer course, it matters whether it is identified rather than treated as standard chlamydia.

Testing for it is usually a second step on a sample that has already come back chlamydia positive, rather than something asked for up front. So a delay between the first result and this conversation is normal.

Go back and ask them to say it again slowly. Nodding through an unfamiliar word is universal and clinics would far rather explain twice than have you leave uncertain.
