Can I get gonorrhoea from kissing?

Question came up after a throat diagnosis in a friend group and nobody could answer it confidently.

NoteMember experience, not medical advice. Symptoms overlap between infections and only a test can tell them apart.

It is debated rather than settled. There is research suggesting throat to throat transmission through deep kissing is possible and may be more common than previously assumed, particularly in populations with high throat infection rates.

It is not established the way oral to genital transmission is, and you will find clinicians who consider it plausible and clinicians who are unconvinced.

The practical takeaway is not stop kissing. It is that throat infection is common, silent, and worth testing for if you have oral sex, which most guidance already says.

Mouthwash has been studied as a possible measure and the results have been mixed at best. Not something to rely on.
