Gonorrhea

Can it get into joints?

Read something alarming about gonorrhoea and arthritis. Is that a real complication or a historical curiosity?

Real, though uncommon. When the bacteria spread through the bloodstream they can cause joint inflammation, skin lesions and tendon inflammation. It has a name, disseminated gonococcal infection.

It is treated differently and usually more intensively than an uncomplicated infection, which is why it matters to identify rather than to ride out.

The combination that should send someone in is joint pain and swelling with a rash and feeling generally unwell, particularly around or after a gonorrhoea diagnosis.

It is one of the reasons treating promptly matters. The risk of it comes from infection left running, not from the treatment.
