Can men be tested for this reliably?

I was diagnosed, my partner went in, and he was told testing in men is unreliable and he would just be treated. Is that a real limitation or a brush off?

It is a real limitation rather than a brush off. Testing in men has historically been less sensitive, and molecular testing is not offered everywhere for that group.

Treating the partner of a diagnosed person without waiting for a test is standard for exactly that reason.

Which is also why a negative result in a male partner should not be used to argue about where it came from. That has caused arguments in more than one thread here.

The only thing to check is that he actually took it, and that you both waited before having sex again. Those two are what determine whether you are back here in a month.
