Genital warts

Cleared six months ago. Do I still tell a new partner?

No visible warts since the spring. New relationship starting and I do not know whether this is still something I have to raise or whether it is now history.

NoteMember experience, not medical advice. Symptoms overlap between infections and only a test can tell them apart.

There is no medically required disclosure here the way there is for some infections, so this is partly a values question rather than purely a clinical one.

What is true clinically: warts are caused by low risk HPV types, most people clear the virus over time, and once you have had no recurrence for a good stretch the likelihood of passing it on falls a lot. It does not drop to a certainty either way.

I tell people, briefly, and it has never gone badly. Two sentences, framed as information rather than confession. Most people know almost nothing about HPV and are more reassured by you being calm about it than by the content.

Also worth mentioning: HPV vaccination protects against the types that cause most warts. If your partner has not been vaccinated, that is a more useful thing to raise than a long conversation about your history.
