Does herpes affect anything else long term?

Beyond outbreaks, does having this cause problems later in life? Fertility, other conditions, anything?

For most people, genital herpes is a skin condition that recurs less and less over time and does nothing else. It does not cause infertility and it does not shorten your life.

The two situations where it needs active management are pregnancy and a significantly weakened immune system. Neither applies to most people asking this.

One genuine point rather than a scary one: an open sore makes it easier to acquire other infections, HIV included. That is an argument for treating outbreaks and using condoms, not an argument for dread.

The lasting effect for me was psychological rather than physical, and that faded too. First year was hard, now I think about it a few times a year.
