Does herpes affect getting pregnant or fertility treatment?

Starting to think about IVF. Does a herpes diagnosis complicate any of that?

NoteMember experience, not medical advice. Symptoms overlap between infections and only a test can tell them apart.

It does not affect fertility itself. Herpes is not associated with the tubal damage that the bacterial infections can cause, which is the usual mechanism behind infection related infertility.

Where it becomes relevant is at delivery rather than at conception, and that is managed with a plan rather than being a barrier.

Tell the fertility clinic anyway, and tell the obstetric team when you get there. The situation that needs planning is a first episode late in pregnancy, which is a different risk from long standing infection.

Suppressive treatment towards the end of pregnancy is commonly used to reduce the chance of an outbreak at the wrong moment. That decision is theirs to make with you, but it is the standard tool and it is worth knowing it exists.
