How worried should I be about resistant gonorrhea?

Read a run of frightening headlines about untreatable gonorrhoea and now I am anxious about my own treatment next week. How much of this applies to an ordinary case?

Resistance is a genuine and serious problem at population level, and it is largely not your problem next week.

Gonorrhoea has worked its way through several classes of antibiotic over the decades, which is why treatment is now an injection rather than the tablets people remember. Isolates with reduced susceptibility are being found and monitored, but the CDC has said it has not confirmed a US case of treatment failure with the currently recommended therapy.

What you can actually do about it: take the treatment you are given rather than something left over from a friend, go back if symptoms persist, and attend the follow up swab if they book one. Persistent symptoms after treatment are how a genuine failure would be spotted.
