I have HSV-1 genitally and he gets cold sores

Diagnosed with HSV-1 in the genital area. My partner has had cold sores since childhood. Are we passing the same thing back and forth?

Almost certainly you acquired it from oral to genital contact, which is now a very common route for first episodes of genital herpes.

Passing it back and forth is not really how it works. Once someone has been infected with a type, existing antibodies make acquiring the same type at another site much less likely.

The practical rule in our house is no oral sex when he has a cold sore or feels one coming. That is the moment shedding is highest, and it is a small ask for the benefit.

Genital HSV-1 also tends to recur much less often than HSV-2 does, so the outlook is generally better than the general herpes information you have probably been reading.
