Is stress really a trigger or is that folklore?

Everyone says stress. It sounds like the kind of thing people say about everything.

Stress is one of the more consistently reported triggers, alongside illness, fatigue, friction and for some people menstruation and sunlight.

The mechanism is plausible rather than folklore, since immune function and recurrence are linked. But the evidence is a lot softer than the confidence with which people state it.

The trap I fell into was treating stress as something I had failed to control, which then became its own stressor. Noticing a pattern is useful. Blaming yourself for an outbreak is not.

Keeping a simple note of dates is the only way to know whether your own triggers are real. Mine turned out to be sleep rather than stress, which I would never have worked out from a general list.
