Penicillin allergy. What are the options?

Diagnosed, and I have a penicillin allergy on my record from childhood. The clinic did not seem as concerned as I expected.

They are probably not concerned because a large share of childhood penicillin allergy labels turn out not to hold up on testing, and because there are established routes either way.

Depending on the stage and your situation, alternatives exist, and where penicillin really is the necessary treatment there is a formal desensitisation process done under supervision.

Say exactly what happened when you reacted as a child, if anyone remembers. A rash is a very different conversation from swelling or breathing trouble, and it changes what they can offer.

In pregnancy this matters more, because penicillin is the treatment with documented efficacy for the baby and the alternatives are not considered equivalent. That is the situation where desensitisation is standard rather than optional.
