Rectal gonorrhoea and no symptoms whatsoever

Positive rectal swab. Nothing at all in the way of symptoms and I would never have known. Slightly unnerved by how close I came to never testing that site.

NoteMember experience, not medical advice. Symptoms overlap between infections and only a test can tell them apart.

That is the normal presentation rather than an unusual one. Rectal infection is frequently completely silent, which is precisely why guidelines push for site specific testing based on what kind of sex people actually have.

The same is true of the throat. Between them, the two silent sites are the reason a urine only screen misses so much.

When you notify partners, say which site. Otherwise they book a standard screen, give a urine sample, and the thing that matters never gets sampled.
