Shooting pain down my leg before an outbreak

Nerve type pain down the back of one thigh, always the same leg, always a day or two before. Is that something I should be worried about separately?

That is a classic pattern rather than a separate worry. The virus lives in a nerve root and reactivation produces symptoms along the territory that nerve serves, which is why it is the same leg every time.

Some people get the nerve pain without any skin lesion at all, which is disconcerting until you know it is described.

Mine is a heavy dragging ache rather than shooting. Same pattern, same side, and it is now my most reliable signal to start episodic treatment.

Do mention it at a review if it is severe or if it changes character. Persistent or worsening nerve pain deserves a look on its own terms rather than being filed under herpes and ignored.
