Telling a new partner I am positive and undetectable

On treatment, undetectable for over a year. Someone new. I know the science and I still cannot work out how to say it.

NoteMember experience, not medical advice. Symptoms overlap between infections and only a test can tell them apart.

Short and factual works better than a build up. What you have, that you are on treatment, that you are undetectable and what that means, and an invitation to ask questions.

The build up is what makes it land as a confession. Delivered as information, most people take it as information.

Have something for them to read afterwards. U equals U is counterintuitive to anyone who last thought about HIV years ago, and reading it from a health service rather than from you does a lot of work.

Also be ready for them to need a few days. The first reaction is often just surprise, and the considered response comes later. Mine came back the next evening having read everything and asked good questions.
