Genital warts

The cream burned. Is that supposed to happen?

Second night of the treatment I was given and the area is raw and sore. I cannot tell whether this is the treatment working or me damaging myself.

Read the application instructions again carefully. A lot of the worst reactions come from applying more than directed, or over a wider area, on the theory that more must be faster. It is not.

Local reaction is expected with the topical treatments and some soreness usually means it is doing something. There is a difference between expected soreness and open ulceration, though, and that line is not one to judge alone.

Ring the clinic and describe what it looks like. There are standard instructions about pausing for a few days and resuming.

Protecting the surrounding normal skin with a barrier ointment before applying was suggested to me and it made a real difference. Worth asking whether that applies to what you are using.
