The sore did not hurt so I ignored it

Had a sore months ago that was completely painless. Assumed it was an ingrown hair and it healed on its own. Now diagnosed and feeling stupid.

NoteMember experience, not medical advice. Symptoms overlap between infections and only a test can tell them apart.

You are not stupid. Painlessness is precisely why the primary sore gets missed, and it heals on its own regardless of treatment, which makes it look resolved.

That combination is the single biggest reason people present later in the course than they would like.

Location plays a part too. Sores inside the vagina, in the rectum, or in the mouth are often never seen at all.

It does change one practical thing: it helps date the infection, which affects staging and treatment length. So tell them roughly when it was, even approximately.
