Gonorrhea

There is a new tablet treatment. Can I ask for it?

Saw that a new oral antibiotic for gonorrhoea was approved, the first new one in decades. I would much rather take something than have another injection. Is this something I can request?

NoteMember experience, not medical advice. Symptoms overlap between infections and only a test can tell them apart.

Two new oral options did get approved in the United States in late 2025, one of them a genuinely new class developed specifically for gonorrhoea. That part is real.

Approval and availability are different things though. Distribution was expected to follow later, and what your clinic can actually prescribe depends on your country and on local guidance, which usually moves slower than a press release.

Worth knowing what they were approved for. The indications are for uncomplicated urogenital infection, and one of them is framed around people with limited or no alternatives. That is narrower than every case of gonorrhoea everywhere.

Ask the clinic what they have and why they are recommending what they are recommending. That is a perfectly reasonable question and you will get a straight answer. Just do not decline effective treatment while you wait for something else to arrive.
