Treated but symptoms came back after a few weeks

Finished treatment, everything cleared, and about three weeks later it’s back. Same symptoms. I’m assuming this means the treatment didn’t work?

Before assuming treatment failure, the question to answer is whether your partner was treated at the same time. Reinfection from an untreated partner is the usual explanation, and it’s so common that clinics generally treat partners as standard rather than as an afterthought.

Go back and say clearly that symptoms returned after treatment. They’ll want to retest rather than just repeat the same course blind.

This was us. I was treated, he wasn’t because he had no symptoms and assumed that meant he didn’t have it. He did. Both treated, no recurrence since.

Alongside the partner question, ask what you were actually given.

The CDC guidance moved to a longer course for women rather than the single dose, because the comparison found the longer one roughly halved the proportion of women testing positive again at follow up. Men are still treated with the single dose.

If you were given a single dose, that is a reasonable thing to raise when you go back. Not a complaint, just a question worth asking before assuming reinfection.
