What do CD4 and viral load actually mean?

Newly diagnosed and my first results are two numbers I do not understand. Everyone talks about them as if they are obvious.

Two different questions.

Viral load is how much virus is in your blood. It is the one treatment drives down, and undetectable means the test can no longer find it. That is the number tied to U equals U.

CD4 is a count of a type of immune cell, so it tells you how your immune system is doing. It recovers over time once treatment is working.

The way it was put to me: viral load is how the treatment is doing, CD4 is how you are doing. Once you are established, viral load is checked routinely and CD4 usually becomes less of a focus.

Ask your team to write your numbers down with what they would like them to be. Mine did and it turned two frightening figures into something I could track.
