What is a chancre supposed to look like?

Asking so I recognise it rather than because I have one. Descriptions I find are vague.

NoteMember experience, not medical advice. Symptoms overlap between infections and only a test can tell them apart.

Classically a single, round, firm, painless ulcer with a clean base, appearing weeks after exposure at the site of contact. It heals on its own over a few weeks whether or not it is treated.

The classic description is also frequently not what happens. Multiple sores, painful sores and atypical appearances are all documented.

Location is the bigger practical issue. Inside the vagina, in the rectum, in the mouth, or in a skin fold, and you simply never see it.

Which is why recognising it visually is not a reliable strategy. Testing is. The sore healing on its own is precisely how people conclude that nothing happened.
