Trichomoniasis

Why treat my partner without testing him?

He has been given treatment on the basis of my result alone. That seems unscientific.

NoteMember experience, not medical advice. Symptoms overlap between infections and only a test can tell them apart.

Testing in men is less sensitive than in women, so a negative result in him would not be reliable enough to act on. Treating known contacts is the standard approach for that reason.

It is pragmatic rather than unscientific: the cost of treating someone who turns out not to have it is low, and the cost of missing it is you being reinfected.

He should still be offered a full screen even if the trich is treated presumptively. Contact treatment for one thing is not a substitute for testing for everything else.

The same logic applies across most of this board. Contacts of gonorrhoea and chlamydia are frequently treated without waiting for their own result.
